Start-Up 101

Posted on October 10, 2012 by iSao7

What is the first thing I need to start my company?

The very first things that are important in a start-up company are a name, logo, slogan, and mission.  This is the exact order you should be focusing your priorities for these items too. It’s important to make sure you put some thought and do your research and homework when creating your company.

Name

The name is probably one of the most important aspects of a company that most people tend to take lightly. You want something short, simple, sweet, and easy to remember that is relevant to the industry you are trying to cater to. You also want to check the domain name availability and last but not least go to USPTO.gov to see if there are any trademarks already taken for the name. The name is an important aspect, but also as important is the logo.

Logo

The logo will be the sign of your company if you will. You want something simple, easy to remember, and symbolic. The logo can be as simple as a cool font, a symbol or graphic relevant to your industry, or a combination of both. Logo’s are everywhere, and there is a reason for this. The logo is the beginning of the brand. Once awareness is created, you will come to realize more and more people will notice your logo, hence creating a brand name for itself. Once customers and people start recognizing your company logo, they also start noticing other things like your slogan which is the next piece of the puzzle when marketing your company.

Slogan

Many companies do not have a slogan but should.  You will realize why after reading this paragraph. Slogans create the connection between the logo, name, and begin to introduce the products or services a company has to offer.  Let’s say the good slogans do this because not all slogans do this.

Mission Statement

The mission statement is an important aspect not just for marketing but for the focus of the company. Many companies have a mission statement and should be used for this reason. The mission should be clear in thought and usually the easiest to make.  There is a reason why you started your company in the first place which usually leads to the mission statement.  This statement can be short, sweet, and simple.

If you haven’t noticed yet, there is a theme of shortness, sweetness, and simpleness.  Less is more when it comes to marketing.  Most people are lead to believe otherwise.

Marketing has never really gained value or trust in companies due to the one major fact.  How to measure the results.  This question has now been answered with the use of technology.  Today, marketing is always tested, measured, and then reused for other marketing avenues. At least, good marketing companies know how to do this. 😉  How?  This is a new topic.

Remember that your company Name, Logo, Slogan, and Mission Statements are important from the start.

Thanks for reading!  Come back soon.
