Picking a business name can be a challenge, but is a very important step when creating a company. We suggest considering the following criteria when doing so:
- Keep it short and simple, so it is easy to remember.
- Easy to spell
- Easy to pronounce
- Name should be relevant to the industry.
- If you can, try to make it catchy.
If you have many names to choose from and undecided on which one to use, you want to narrow the name selection lets say to three and then do some research. Doing research will help narrow the names even further.
The first thing you want to do for your research is check to see if the name already exists. There are many ways to do this. Since VIP-Effect.com is an internet marketing company, we will use the internet to do this. There are other means to do research and a library is always helpful place for this.
You can go to a domain registrar company like GoDaddy.com or NetworkSolutions.com to see if the domain is available. If the domain is available, then you are ahead of the game. If it isn’t available, look into alternatives such as adding a dash (-) or an underscore (_) to the name. Most businesses are online, so if the domain name isn’t available even with using the symbol alternatives, it probably isn’t a good name to go with.
If you really want to get into the nitty gritty, you can also pick a phone number with your name in it as well. You also want to make sure that all names that are used are also crossed reference in the www.uspto.gov. This way, you can choose a name that isn’t similar to someone else.
It’s also helpful to be able to visualize the name. Whether it be an image or graphic, it’s important to see how people might be able to visualize the name when they hear it. This also goes hand-in-hand when designing the logo.
